About Colin Coatings Des Moines

Family-owned floor coating contractor in Des Moines. The owner grinds the floor.

We are a small Des Moines floor coating company built on one idea: the person who quotes your floor should be the person standing on it with the grinder. Every slab tested. Every estimate itemized. Every customer treated like a neighbor, because most of them are.

Our story

Colin Coatings grew out of Colin Concrete Des Moines, the concrete company Jose Colin has run in Central Iowa for more than 20 years. After two decades of pouring driveways, garage slabs, and shop floors across the metro, Jose kept getting the same call from customers a few years later: "The epoxy we had put on is peeling. Can you fix it?"

Almost every time, the problem wasn't the concrete. It was the coating job. Acid etching instead of grinding. No moisture test on a slab that was pushing vapor. A 4-mil kit sold as a "professional" floor. A topcoat that yellowed in one summer of sun through the garage door.

So in 2026 we started Colin Coatings Des Moines to do floor coatings the way we pour concrete: prep first, materials that match the climate, and a written spec so the customer knows what they bought.

What makes us different

Four things we built the company around, and four things most floor coating companies in Des Moines will not put in writing.

We grind. We never etch.

Every floor is diamond-ground to a CSP 2–3 profile before anything goes down. Acid etching leaves a smooth, dusty surface that coatings peel from within a couple of winters. Grinding is slower and louder, and it is the single biggest reason our floors stay down.

We test the slab before we coat it.

Iowa concrete pushes moisture vapor, especially in basements and on new construction. We run a calcium-chloride or in-slab relative-humidity test on every floor. If the numbers are high, we tell you and price a moisture-mitigation primer instead of hoping.

Concrete people, not painters.

Twenty years of pouring and finishing concrete means we know why your slab is cracking, pitting, or dusting, and we fix that before the coating goes on. Most coating crews have never poured a floor.

We document our work.

Product data sheets, batch numbers, thickness readings, and photos of every stage. Every project on our portfolio page is a real job in the Des Moines metro, not a stock photo.

The crew

Everyone on a Colin Coatings job is a trained, insured employee, not a day laborer. Most of the crew also works on the concrete side, so they've poured the kinds of slabs they're now coating."]
