Flake Floor Coating Des Moines

Flake (also called chip) floors are the standard finish for garages, basements, and shops across the Des Moines metro, and for good reason: the vinyl flake hides slab repairs, adds traction, resists wear, and comes in dozens of blends. Colin Coatings installs full-broadcast flake floors with a polyaspartic topcoat, most in a single day.

What a Flake Floor Is

A flake floor is a pigmented base coat (epoxy or polyurea), a full broadcast of vinyl flake "to refusal" so no base shows through, a scrape and vacuum, and a clear polyaspartic topcoat. The result is a textured, terrazzo-like surface 20 to 30 mils thick. "Light broadcast" or "partial flake" floors sprinkle flake over a solid color; they cost less but show every roller mark and every future scratch. We install full broadcast only.

Flake sizes1/4" (standard), 1/8" (finer, smoother), 1/16" (micro), and 1" (bold). Blends: 40+ stock blends from Tuxedo, Gravel, Domino, and Cabin Fever to custom mixes matched to your trim or cabinets.

Flake Floor Questions

Is a flake floor slippery?
Less than a smooth coating; the flake texture adds grip. We can add extra anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat for wet areas.
Does flake hide cracks and repairs?
Yes. That's one of its biggest advantages over solid-color and metallic floors. Repaired cracks and pits disappear under a full broadcast.
Flake epoxy or flake polyaspartic?
The flake is the same; the difference is the resin. We use a polyurea or epoxy base and always a polyaspartic topcoat for UV stability. → Polyaspartic vs epoxy
How do I clean a flake floor?
Broom, shop vac, or hose. Neutral cleaner for stains. No harsh solvents needed.
Can I see the colors in person?
Yes. We bring sample boards to every estimate.
